Trying Hainanese Chicken Rice at the Source – Was It Worth It?<\/p>\n
Welcome to Hainan, often called China\u2019s Hawaii! <\/p>\n
This was our first full food adventure in Haikou, and it started with breakfast at Chunfu Teahouse (Spring & Blessings) for tea and dim sum. The highlight was the radish cake fried in lard. Crispy, rich and packed with flavour.<\/p>\n
In the evening we explored Haikou\u2019s famous Arcaded Streets, a lively tourist area made up of beautifully restored 1920s shophouses. We tried the local Hainanese chicken rice, but honestly\u2026 it was a bit average for me. <\/p>\n
Thankfully, the night was saved with Lanzhou hand-pulled noodles, dumplings, and roujiamo (the Chinese \u201chamburger\u201d).<\/p>\n
The next morning, I headed into a local residential neighbourhood for Hainan rice noodles and seafood noodle soup, and this was much more my kind of place.<\/p>\n
For Chinese New Year, we visited one of the island\u2019s most famous chicken rice restaurants. I hope I didn\u2019t offend anyone in the video, but I have to be honest, I\u2019m still not quite getting the Hainan version. I think I\u2019m just too used to khao mun gai in Thailand!<\/p>\n
We wrapped up the night at Century Park with New Year\u2019s Eve fireworks and a bowl of spicy cold mala noodles.<\/p>\n
