Xi’s Pyongyang visit plays into China’s efforts to be a ‘more global leader’, says expert
Chinese President Xi Jinping said China and North Korea will jointly fight against hegemony and attempts to revive militarism that threatens regional security, according to comments published in North Korea’s state newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Monday (Jun 8). It comes a day after Pyongyang reaffirmed its nuclear armed status, saying there is no backing down from it. The Chinese leader will be in Pyongyang on Monday for a two-day visit, in his first trip to North Korea in almost seven years. Jenny Town, senior fellow at Washington-based think-tank Stimson Center and director of its 38 North programme, shares her thoughts on the significance of Xi’s visit with CNA’s Asia First.
